Sofia: Dublin’s Multilingual Indie Artist Translating Emotions Into Song

Sofia, an Italian-Peruvian musician now based in Dublin, crafts indie-rock-pop melodies that bridge languages and cultures. Starting her journey at 14 with her father’s guitar lessons, she’s turned music into a diary of emotions, blending Italian, Spanish, and English to connect with audiences. “Music has been the heart of my life for as long as I can remember,” she shares. Though she paused her musical path after moving to Ireland, Sofia recently reignited her passion, performing at Dublin’s open mic nights while dreaming of her debut EP.

Early Musical Background: A Father’s Guitar, A Daughter’s Calling

Sofia’s story begins in Italy with her father, whose love for guitar sparked her own. At 14, she asked him to teach her, unknowingly setting her life’s course. “Everything started because of my dad,” she says. “He always had a passion for music, especially playing guitar. From then, I never stopped.” Her Peruvian roots and multilingual upbringing added depth to her artistry, but it was her father’s mentorship that laid the foundation.

Her first performance—a high school concert—unlocked a love for the stage. “It was so much fun, and since then, I’ve been looking for that excitement,” she recalls. What began as a school talent show soon grew into regular appearances at Rome’s open mic scene, where she honed her craft.

Musical Development: Lyrics as Emotional Archaeology

Sofia’s songwriting is less about storytelling and more about emotional exploration. “My lyrics sound like songs dedicated to someone, but they’re really attempts to explain what I feel to myself,” she explains. Writing exclusively in Italian, she acknowledges the language barrier but leans into universal emotions: “I write in Italian, so for most people, it can be complicated. But music helps me communicate feelings that words alone can’t.”

Her style defies strict labels—she calls it “a mix of indie, rock, and pop”—but her multilingual performances set her apart. After moving to Dublin in her early twenties, Sofia took an unexpected hiatus: “My path with music stopped for a while. But a month ago, I decided to get back into the game.” Her return to the stage in Ireland marked a emotional milestone: “Performing here in Dublin was a big emotion for me.”

Achievements & Experience: From Rome to Dublin’s Stages

Though Sofia hasn’t yet released music, her live performances reveal her growth. In Rome, she frequented open mic nights, building confidence through small, intimate crowds. Dublin’s scene offered a fresh challenge: “Moving to a new country disrupted my journey, but performing here reminded me why I love this.”

Her most vulnerable moments happen onstage. “Audiences can expect to see a very vulnerable part of me,” she says. “Going on stage is always beautiful but tiring and intense from my perspective.” This raw authenticity defines her performances, whether in Italy or Ireland.

Musical Style & Approach: A Language of Three Tongues

Sofia’s music thrives on blending Italian, Spanish, and English. “I like to involve all three languages—they’re part of me,” she says. This trilingual approach isn’t just lyrical; it’s a bridge between cultures. “I focus on communication where there’s a language barrier. The choice of words is important, but emotions and music transcend that.”

Her creative process is deeply introspective. Songs emerge from unprocessed feelings: “They’re not linked to a particular moment. I’m trying to translate emotions I’ve felt and still feel.” This vulnerability resonates with audiences, even those who don’t speak Italian.

Personal Life & Influences: Dancing Through the Noise

Outside music, Sofia finds rhythm in dance. “I like dancing a lot—it’s probably always part of the music world,” she laughs. Her life pulses with sound: “The moments of silence in my life can be counted on one hand. Music is what keeps me alive; nothing would make sense without it.”

Her Peruvian heritage and Italian upbringing subtly shape her artistry, though she credits her father as her primary inspiration. “He didn’t just teach me chords—he taught me how to feel music,” she reflects.

Current Projects & Future Goals: Chasing the EP Dream

Sofia’s current focus is recording her first EP, a long-delayed project. “I’m thinking of recording an EP soon, but it’s something I’ve dreamed about for a long time and never realized,” she admits. While she dreams of making music her career, she prioritizes authenticity: “If that doesn’t happen, I’ll keep finding moments to communicate through this instrument.”

Her ultimate goal? To live authentically through her art. “I hope my music creates a space where emotions feel understood, no matter the language,” she says.

Closing & Contact: Join Sofia’s Journey

Sofia continues to perform at Dublin’s open mic nights, inviting audiences into her world of multilingual melodies. Catch her next performance at "Out Of Order" in Fibber Magees Dublin on 20th February 2025—a showcase of her emotionally charged indie-rock-pop style.
