Claiming to be Dublin’s “original live music venue” and possibly the best indie nightclub to be found in the town, Whelan’s is a great spot to meet fellow music-lovers, particularly those who are into rock! Established in 1989, the place has since become a well-known and highly respected venue. One can now say that it is one of the best places in Ireland to catch bands both international and local.
Even during the pandemic, Whelan’s did the right thing by switching its live performances from on-stage to online, hosting streams featuring a wide variety of artists, from rock bands to DJs.
People who have left reviews about this place have remarked that this is where you find all the cool kids in Dublin. All one has to do if “follow the music.” Others have also remarked that the venue can be surprisingly small for all of the extremely popular bands that do perform here, allowing you to get up close and personal with all of your favourite acts in a way that you would never be able to at festivals or large-scale concerts.
It even went so far as to host a series of special Christmas-themed performances by artists such as The Academic, Hothouse Flowers, Dea Matrona, Turn, Paddy Casey, These Charming Men, Something Happens, Kila, Mandy, Brian Deady, The Riptide Movement, Son (Susan O’Neill), and Tohsin! One can expect this venue to adapt to current circumstances and still continue to deliver performances from a range of different artists from a variety of genres.
You can expect to find a good mix of tourists as well as locals here, so you can meet a variety of people, learning about countries abroad as well as all there is to know about Dublin itself!
Whelan’s is a pub located in the middle of all the hustle-and-bustle of Dublin. In spite of being incorrectly pronounced as “Waylan’s” often, it retains a reputation of being the place to be if one desires an excellent atmosphere as well as top-notch live performances by well-known artists.
This venue has been performed in by the likes of musical legends such as Jeff Buckley, Nick Cave, Christy Moore, and more! See what we did there?
Not only does it have an impressive list of artists that have performed there, but it also has a good number of big names still set to perform!
You can even find a human-sized statue with a pint of Guinness at the bar to join you, making sure that you “never need drink alone”.
