In the pulsating heart of Dublin’s vibrant electronic music scene, a distinct energy emanates from the DJ booth, guided by a figure known simply as DJB. More than just a performer, DJB, whose full name is Barbaro Fazio, is a true architect of psychedelic soundscapes, weaving together a narrative that spans his Sicilian roots, his adopted home in Ireland, and a profound connection to the underground ethos of psytrance. His journey is a testament to the power of musical revelation, community, and an unwavering dedication to an art form that, for him, is a way of life.
DJB’s story begins far from Dublin’s bustling streets, in the sun-drenched landscapes of Sicily where he grew up. Yet, it was in Ireland that his true calling ignited. “I’ll never forget our first tour—because…” his passion for DJing wasn't a gradual discovery but an instant, visceral connection. It happened during his first time at the Voodoo Lounge, where he encountered psytrance music for the first time. “I never heard before I came in Ireland and was love at first impression,” he recalls, a moment that fundamentally shifted his trajectory.
This wasn't merely about enjoying a new sound; it was an urgent desire to understand the music, its culture, and its origins. Fuelled by this newfound obsession, he started with the most basic tools: a laptop and a Numark controller, purchased for a mere 20 euros.
His very first forays into mixing were pragmatic and self-taught, using a Lenovo laptop, Numark Party Mix, and Serato software. This humble setup became his crucible, teaching him an invaluable lesson: “first you have to learn music all kind before buying an expensive equipment,” a philosophy he embraced wholeheartedly. He honed his craft at countless early parties—from Fibbers to raves and sound house gatherings.
The spark that truly lit his artistic fire was ignited by a pantheon of psytrance legends, including Astrix, Astral Projection, Mandala, Raja Ram, and Tristan, whom he now reveres as mentors. Beyond the beats, it was that transformative moment at 24, experiencing his first psytrance party in Ireland, that resonated deeply, making him feel “that is the music give me something more”.
DJB’s current setup reflects his evolution from those nascent beginnings, now featuring a Pioneer RX2 controller and Ableton for effects and production. His approach to preparing for a gig is as fluid and intuitive as his music itself. “Dependent on the gig I’m doing, the time the day and the location,” he explains, emphasizing that each set is a unique creation. He aims to “bring people inside my psychedelic emotion,” carefully selecting tracks based on what he wants to express and adapting to the "flow" of different times of the day. When facing unexpected moments on the dance floor, his philosophy is clear: “simple feeling what I want and people want just go forward never give up”.
His signature style is a meticulously constructed sonic journey. Every set begins with an intro that carries a message, gradually building in intensity. The middle features a "bridge of emotion vocals to let also know we are going faster," culminating in a "finish blasting home made track". Technically, he defines his sound through looping, effects, and mash-ups.
Crucially, his connection with the crowd is paramount. “I’m part of the crowd,” he states, taking time to speak with attendees before his set and observing their energy throughout. This symbiotic relationship between DJ and audience is central to his performance.
DJB’s musical compass points firmly towards Full On and Progressive psytrance, genres he champions because they make him “feel alive” and are constantly evolving through his work. His method of discovering new music is distinct; he primarily “try to create them”, and then digs for what he feels is missing. Unsurprisingly, given his deep immersion in electronic sound, he doesn’t typically draw samples or ideas from non-EDM sources like jazz or film scores.
Among his many performances, one stands out as truly unforgettable: playing at Neelix at Voodoo Lounge. He attributes its magic to “the vibes the floor and my music” coming together in perfect harmony. Remarkably, DJB shares that he has never felt a set pushed him out of his comfort zone, nor has he experienced a technical failure mid-set.
Looking ahead, his dream collaborators are his early inspirations; Tristan, Astrix, and Mandala, whom he considers his mentors. His connection with the wider DJ and producer community is organic and grounded, typically formed by “just going to parties having a chat”. The influence of his fans is deeply felt; their “vibes” and “love” for his music directly shape his selections and performance style.
Currently, DJB is immersed in his own productions, with a track titled "Psychedelic Substances" on the finishing line. His creative process is meticulous: “staying there and listen everything over and over adjust every single time till I think is done and before release i try for the floor”.
Such is his dedication that he has quit his job to focus solely on music, even opening a psychedelic clothing shop to support his artistic endeavours. "Psychedelic Substances" holds a special place, born from a night after a party with his friend Massimo, signifying an ongoing shared journey.
DJB’s vision for his dance floor is clear: he hopes people experience “love amazing vibes and psychedelic energy and emotion”. Through his sets, he aims to convey messages that can range from “rock emotion, all mash-up rock and Psy trance” to powerful statements like “stop the war or future etc in my word’s”.
He sees the role of the DJ “getting bigger and bigger”, viewing it as “a real investment”. Away from the decks, he finds inspiration and balance through raves and festivals, embracing the very culture he helps to create. Before a gig, he has a simple, profound ritual: “ask Ganesha to be ready to rock”. Post-set, he unwinds with stretching, walking, and lots of fruit.
