In the vibrant world of electronic music, some artists find their calling on the dancefloor before ever stepping behind the decks. For the DJ known as Algorithmix, this was precisely the path taken. Based in Dublin, Ireland, after growing up in Leek Staffordshire in the middle of England and travelling through England and Australia, he initially declared, "I didn't want to DJ. I just enjoyed dancing to other DJs."
However, the magnetic pull of the craft soon became undeniable. As he puts it, "Once you get sucked in and can see what magic can be made, I'd never go back to not DJing."
His stage name, Algorithmix, was chosen after careful consideration, reflecting his approach to mixing. He explains, "I took a long time deciding on a DJ name, as I know there are a lot of DJs who choose one and then change it when they start to get popular."
He feels Algorithmix "goes well because I use known algorithms—like knowing what tunes will go well together and mixing them—thus becoming Algorithmix."
The very first time Algorithmix played a set was an unexpected opportunity. It happened for the Psychedelic Sheep collective at Sandymount nature reserve.
Having been playing at house parties, he mentioned to the event organizer, Jamie, that he had his USB ready if needed. When one of the scheduled DJs didn't show up, he got his chance.
Recalling the moment, he shares the profound impact it had: "Wow, I was mind-blown and have just wanted to do it again and again since." For this inaugural set, he used Rekordbox software.
His musical journey has been shaped by various influences and genres over time. He grew up on happy hardcore before being introduced to Psytrance in 2018. Key DJs and producers who ignited his passion include Vegas, Blazy, and Infected Mushroom.
He describes them as "magical Psytrance DJs producing insane music that just takes your brain to another realm." Beyond specific artists, his taste has been shaped by a love for "finding new songs."
He emphasizes the importance of this, stating, "You have to stay ahead of other DJs, rather than just playing the same songs." Currently, he is most passionate about Progressive FullOn Psytrance or DnB.
Algorithmix's current setup for bringing his sound to life includes a Standalone Pioneer XDJ RR, a laptop with Pioneer XDJ 400 Rekordbox, a surround sound system, and a SoundBoks 2nd gen speaker. He also utilizes the Full Unseen Dreams Events Rave setup.
Preparation for a set involves a thoughtful process. He selects appropriate songs and organizes them by BPM, starting slow and building up. He then practices the set to ensure the chosen tunes flow and sound as intended. However, for house parties or after-parties, he prefers to "just go with the flow," trusting that all the songs on his USB are ones he knows and likes.
Building a set for an audience is about creating a journey. He selects songs relevant to the event's theme, genre, and even the time of year. His general approach is to "start slow and finish with a bang." While he has taken a production course, he hasn't yet released his own tracks.
His current focus is on mixing other people's songs, using beat matching, effects, and loops to "merge one song into another seamlessly." He actively reads the crowd's energy, noting if they are enjoying the set and adapting quickly to different songs if needed to see a better reaction.
Even with careful preparation, the unexpected can happen. Algorithmix has faced technical failures mid-set, such as equipment or power faults. His strategy for recovery is simple: "Be prepared to expect the unexpected."
When issues arise, he tries to "resolve it as quickly as possible while remaining calm and making sure the audience understands that we are trying to fix the issue." He believes that if you "just keep going, then people are less likely to notice that something wasn't planned."
Among his most memorable experiences, playing the injector rave on his birthday last year stands out. He cherishes the memory of the beautiful location and the Aura bora shining, which created a "magical night." Getting to play in the morning and "bring the sun up" made it particularly special.
Another significant set was the Electronic Party Ireland DnB cage in Sound House, where he was challenged to mix Psy and DnB. He successfully transitioned from 136 BPM up to 180 BPM, covering various sub-genres before finishing with DnB, describing it as a "magical set."
While currently focused on mixing, Algorithmix has aspirations in music production. He has taken a production course with School of Groove but is waiting for the time to "sit down and get my first production underway." He hopes to incorporate samples from movies into his future productions.
Connecting with the community is important to Algorithmix. He believes in fairness and the value of giving and receiving constructive criticism, noting, "The more advice I share, the more I seem to get back." He emphasizes the vital role of his fans, stating directly, "Without fans, we wouldn't have raves or parties."
As a promoter, fans are essential for filling events and generating revenue, but his ultimate drive comes from "the love of music and seeing the enjoyment fans get from hearing me play."
Looking ahead, he sees the role of the DJ continuing to evolve, believing "the sky's the limit." His goal on the dance floor is for people to experience "a magical night that takes them away to other worlds." He aims to convey messages and vibes of positivity, connection, and freedom of expression through his sets.
Outside of his life as Algorithmix, his passions include promoting for numerous collectives and working as a background extra for movies and TV shows. He lives by the simple mantra: "Do what you love and you'll never work a day in your life."
His pre-gig ritual is consistent: he always tries to practice his set. He advises playing the music you love, as this "will shine through in your music." After a set, he finds playing to be "therapeutic" and a "pleasure," which is "enlightening on its own."
