There's a special magic in music that speaks directly to the soul, and that's exactly what you'll find in the work of Lorenzo, known on stage as Sourstring. As part of his live performance scheduled in Fibber Magees on 19th of June, we recently had the opportunity to learn more about the person behind the music, and we're excited to share his story with you. Prepare to feel the connection!
Lorenzo's story begins in a very small village close to Rome, Italy, where he grew up. It was here, at the tender age of just 5 or 6 years old, that he had his first encounter with the instrument that would become central to his life – the guitar. He recalls seeing a family friend play, and that initial fascination stuck with him, leading him to start playing himself when he was only 11. His musical taste was significantly shaped by his older sister, who is nine years his senior and introduced him to the world of classic rock bands like Guns n Roses, Led Zeppelin, and Pink Floyd from a young age.
Life brought Lorenzo to Dublin, Ireland, nine years ago when he was 19, and he has been based there ever since.
While Lorenzo had been writing songs and performing since he was 15, the moment music truly became more than a hobby and a path he wanted to pursue as his living occurred in 2019 in Dublin. He had taken a break from playing for a couple of years and realized just how essential music was to him, stating that nothing compares to the feeling he gets when he's on stage or composing.
His initial instrument of self-expression was the guitar, which remained his focus for a long time before he began learning the harmonica years later. Although his goal is to build a career in music, Lorenzo currently works full-time, having spent a decade in hospitality.
The Creative Pulse
Lorenzo's songwriting process is quite intuitive and varied. He often starts with a guitar rhythm and chords that he finds appealing, letting the music guide the lyrics that gradually take shape. Other times, he begins with a pre-written text and fits it to the music. Regardless of the method, his primary aim is to stay true to himself, ensuring that the resulting creation is something he genuinely likes and finds inspiring. Inspiration is found everywhere; he draws from everyday life, his feelings, and his perception of the world to create what he calls lyrical "pictures".
Sourstring describes his current sound as very basic, featuring primarily acoustic guitar and harmonica. He characterizes it as very rhythmic and funky, while also being raw and expressive. Through his lyrics, he delves into themes of personal feelings, experiences, love stories, and social issues. He believes his energetic way of playing is a signature element that helps distinguish his music.
One of Lorenzo's most significant achievements was the completion of an EP with his former band. It was a challenging process involving seven members, and he was heavily involved in the production and recording sessions. Despite external obstacles that slowed down the project, they persevered and successfully released the EP, which he remains very proud of. This experience taught him a crucial lesson: that hard work always pays off. Like many artists, he has encountered setbacks and heard "no" many times on his journey, but his passion for the art has always outweighed the difficulties.
Lorenzo dreams of sharing the stage with guitar legends who continue to inspire him, including BB King, Buddy Guy, Gary Moore, and Mark Knopfler. He actively supports the local music scene by attending and collaborating on live shows and events with other artists, believing it's vital to support the community and live performances.
What does he hope listeners experience through his music? He wants to offer moments where people can release some of the stress of ordinary life. He skillfully balances entertainment with deeper messages, using his rhythmic style to deliver serious lyrical themes while maintaining a light mood and entertaining the audience. In his shows, he extends an invitation to the audience "to live all the heavy thoughts somewhere else, and to fully immerse in the sound and the vibration of the music and the soul". He prefers that listeners interpret his lyrics and music in their own way rather than him explaining the specific stories behind the songs.
Outside of music, Lorenzo enjoys reading, traveling, trying new experiences, and challenging himself. He finds that these aspects of his life directly feed back into the music he creates. He doesn't follow a strict routine but tries to rehearse and compose as often as possible. Interestingly, playing and composing are not tiring for him; they are, in fact, a form of recharging.
Currently, Lorenzo is focused on live show performances. He plans to start recording some of his work soon and create music videos. Looking five years into the future, he sees himself open to new opportunities, continuing to write and experiment with sounds. He hopes to be performing at festivals or going on tour, with dream venues including the iconic Glastonbury festival, known for its history and diverse audience, and the Montreal Jazz Festival, which he sees as a place for true music lovers to celebrate artistry.
